DESIGNER PROFILE:
CHRISTOPHE PILLET
Past, Present, and Future of French Hospitality
"What is great about a hotel is being free to do things that you’re not allowed to do at home."
Coming from an art school background, and having dabbled in music, Christophe Pillet’s work possesses a sense of movement and harmony. The French designer approaches his work with the creative flair of a writer or a cinematographer, a style that is present at the Sezz hotels in St.Tropez and Paris.
When designing these properties Pillet used the surroundings as inspiration: in Paris, it was the cold, dark grey stone of the surrounding buildings; while in St.Tropez he played off the feeling of a long vacation, creating an environment that allows the natural elements to play off each other. “It’s more like cinematography, rather than architecture, using existing things to create emotion: the gardens, the light, the shadows, the color of the sky,” he says.
It is this knack for story telling that has seen him work with some of the world’s most prestigious brands, receiving international acclaim in Japan, Great Britain, China and the United States. Fette Sans from Berlin's favorite digital interview magazine Freunde von Freunden caught up with him to hear his story.
