SHAME, AND THE CITY

The Standard, New York on the Silver Screen

“Shame” has a lot in common with films that plumb the toxic romance of the bottle or the needle. The crucial difference is that its protagonist, a handsome, youngish Manhattanite named Brandon (Michael Fassbender), is hooked on sex.

With Oscar time approaching fast, we wanted to direct your attention to one of the unsung heroes of 2011's silver screen... The Standard, New York. In the scene where Sissy (Carey Mulligan) performs and Brandon (Michael Fassbender) and Marianne have their tryst, the stunning interior and panoramic views from the hotel dramatically enhance the drama of the scene.

In the words of the film's location manager, David Velasco: Steven [McQueen, the Director] had spent time at The Standard when visiting New York, so during the process of him writing the script with Abi Morgan, he had always pictured that scene with Carey being there. Originally we thought we'd think about The Standard, but maybe we'd go find something else. But as time went on, and the more discussions we had, we said, 'Well, if The Standard is where you want to be, and it's what you imagined when you wrote it, why don't we just do it there?' It took some finagling with the hotel; they're very particular about who does what there...

The movie's trailer (featured above) gives you a glimpse into the hotel at around the 0:35 mark...
